LAUNCHING CEREMONY OF TEACHERS’ DAY CONFERENCE
IN CONJUCTION WITH THE 29TH TEACHERS‘ DAY CELEBRATION 2019

TUNGKU LINK, GADONG In an effort to improve the quality of education in Brunei Darussalam, the Ministry of Education today held a Teachers’ Day Conference in conjunction with the 29th Teachers’ Day Celebration, 2019. The one-day conference was held at the Chancellor Hall and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education, Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

Present as the Guest of Honour to launch the Teachers’ Day Conference was the Minister of Education, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman.Also present was the Deputy Minister of Education, Yang Mulia Datin Seri Paduka Dr. Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd. Salleh.

The theme for the Teachers’ Day Conference this year is “Empowering Educational Excellence through Innovation” (Memperkasa Kecemerlangan Pendidikan Melalui Inovasi) which is in line with the 29th Teachers’ Day Celebration theme for 2019, “Quality Education As The Core of Learners’ Excellence”.

The objective of this conference was to convene educators, researchers, professionals, policy makers and school leaders from various educational fields to share, discuss and acquire deeper insights on practical and theoretical knowledge on innovation programmes and strategies to enhance the quality of our education.

Besides that, the conference was aimed to provide a platform for teachers to share and discuss best intervention strategies to: (1) improve the performance of students, (2) enhance their knowledge on the implementation of these strategies in the classroom, and (3) understand the importance of intervention activities to improve the performance of students. The conference highlighted 6 key sub-themes:(i) Literacy and Numeracy Skills; (ii) Innovative Pedagogy in Adult Learning; (iii) Digital Technology in Education; (iv) Early Education Innovation Practices; (v) Action Research in Education; and (vi)Special Needs in Education.

The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat led by Yang Mulia Yang Mulia Ustaz Zakaria bin Hj Mohd Salleh, Pegawai Hal Ehwal Masjid, Kg Pulaie and followed by a welcoming speech by the Co-chairman, Yang Mulia Pengiran Hajah Mas Joliwane binti Pengiran Haji Tejudin, Acting Head of Science, Technology and Environment Partnership Centre (STEP Centre), Ministry of Education.

The morning session started with a keynote address from Dr. Teo Chew Lee, the internationally renowned speaker and Senior Research Scientist from The National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Her talk emphasised on the importance of innovation in education. Following the keynote address, participants had the opportunity to view and discuss on 5 poster presentations displayed by teachers and Masters of Teaching (MTeach) students. The morning event ended with a forum session chaired by Yang Mulia Awang Eddy Fazlin bin Hamdan, Assistant Director in the Department of Schools along with 3 following speakers to share and present their innovative practices in the education settings: Awang Haji Mat Dani bin Haji Abu Bakar, Headmaster of Sekolah Rendah Dato Mohd Yassin; Dayang Nadia Kadir, Public Sector Lead for Microsoft Brunei Sdn. Bhd; and Dayang Emily Tham, Mathematics Teacher in Chung Hwa Middle School.

The afternoon session proceeded with the presentation of 30 working papers in parallel sessions and also 4 workshops conducted by academics from SHBIE, Universiti Brunei Darussalam. The workshops provided participants with hands-on experience on innovation strategies that they could apply in their education settings.

The Teachers’ Day Conference is co-chaired by Science, Technology and Environment Partnership Centre (STEP Centre) and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education, UBD (SHBIE).

A total of 282 participants, representing various educational institutions from Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religious Affairs in Brunei Darussalam to participate in the conference.

Taib, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei; Yang Mulia Dr. Haji Adanan bin Haji Basar, Ra’es of KUPU SB; Yang Mulia Dr. Chin Wei Keh, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education), Ministry of Education; Yang Mulia Awang Aliuddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education), Ministry of Education; Yang Mulia Hajah Anis Faudzulani bj Haji Dzulkiflee, Acting Director-General of Education; Directors and Senior Officers of the Ministry of Education.
